We’ve come to learn that when picking Saint costumes for All Saints Day, it is all about the accessories. 2019 costumes were largely decided upon by the awesomeness of the particular saint’s accessories. Of course, for my eldest, that means weapons! He was Saint Longinus - and I just love a saint costume that I can order pre-made! Our eldest daughter chose Saint Brigid, who was an Irish abbess and is often depicted with fire, as she lit a fire at the convent that burned perpetually! For her costume, we used a white long sleeve nightgown and a green velvet cape from Amazon. The little two were a pair - Saint Scholastica and Saint Benedict (who were twins!)! Scholastica is deprecated with a dove, as when she died, Saint Benedict knew she had passed by the sight of a white dove. Saint Benedict is often shown with a raven; as the story goes, he often fed a raven portions of his own bread. Once when he was given poisoned bread, he summoned the raven to dispose of it so no one would be harmed by it! The nun costume was online, and Saint Benedict’s is simply a black hoodie and a fleece rectangle with a hole cut for the neck, draped over and gathered at the waist.
We have the children make final decisions about saint costumes by the end of September, so we are getting close! I can’t wait to see who the children choose this year!
